For mega-ship lovers, Norwegian Bliss is the ship to choose when cruising to Alaska. It has all of the bells and whistles you have come to expect from a ship of its size, including signature entertainment, a variety of bars and lounges, diverse dining options, and an enthusiastic crew. Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) Alaskan cruises typically range from seven to nine days, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Alaska's landscapes. Cruises sail past iconic sights such as Glacier Bay, the Inside Passage, and the Hubbard Glacier. The ship also features many family cabins (connecting staterooms) across most categories. So you can get a massage but then you are not allowed to go sit in the sauna afterward. Just don’t forget you can get free ice cream and soft serve in the Garden Cafe and often there are free treats in the Observation Lounge as well. There are enough hidden expenses on the Norwegian Bliss without racking up a bill on sweets.
Some Final Goodbyes on the Ship
With the Malting’s Whiskey bar packed, we were able to grab a couch at our go-to Sugarcane Mojito bar. It wasn’t scheduled to open for another 20 minutes, but this would be the perfect place for our last celebratory drink. We stayed until 11 pm or so when we all decided to call it a night. We were the only ones flying out the next morning as one couple lives in Seattle and the other couple was flying back east on Sunday. This took a bit longer than expected, so we were not off the ship until 5 pm. Finding our way to Fishermen’s Wharf was very easy, and the scenic walk took only about 10 minutes.

Enjoying the “view” of New York city on the bar’s giant screens for a few moments, the Princess wanted to scope out the slot machines. Given that we were already upstairs, I wanted to peek into the much publicized Seafood Buffet at the Garden Cafe. The only additions were a large section of shrimp cocktail and steamed mussels.

And, family-friendly features seem less visible (the one exception being the kids splash zone on Deck 16). But the worst part was when the Captain came out and, even though I was sitting second row center, didn’t even acknowledge my week-long attempts at seduction with a little wink or nod or some other sign that he knew I existed. I was in the throngs of despair, yes, but at least there was guacamole and I was alone so I could double dip.
For those who are a bit worried about cruising to the region, NCL Bliss is a breath of fresh air. Tonight, we were doing Jersey Boys with the wives of the other two couples. Prior to meeting at the show for 10 pm, we grabbed a drink at the A-List bar. With a beautiful morning unfolding, today was the day that I could finally capture some outdoor pictures and video. With three ports in a row, we were starting to feel the fatigue.

This 7-day cruise was a round-trip cruise leaving from Seattle, WA. The ports included Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria, British Columbia. This is a pretty typical round-trip itinerary, but we did feel our time in Juneau was a little rushed. Full day stops in Ketchikan and Skagway provided ample opportunity to enjoy a shore excursion as well as time to self-explore the downtown and port area. Like our previous cruise, it was a late day stop in Victoria, British Columbia. Still, this schedule was a great re-introduction to the region and a wonderful 7-day cruise.

I hope I don’t exceed my onboard spending budget of zero dollars. The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019. That said, the odd pace of his show meant the four of us could discuss the trip and our thoughts on everything so far. I almost hesitate to call the Norwegian Bliss’ offering mini golf but you will find five small putting greens at the very back of the boat, above and behind the race track. You have to really look for them as it isn’t marked and is easily overlooked. That is suitable though since it feels as if the design of this space was a bit of an oversight. The televisions in the staterooms include free movie channels playing action, drama, comedy, and family movies around the clock. However, if you need to get out of the room and move around, they do occasionally play family movies in the Atrium on Deck 6. Honestly, one night in a hotel room in New York plus dinner and show tickets would likely cost more than my entire cruise fare. With so many bars and lounges to discover, finding your favorite may take a few days.
